So a couple of weeks ago we bought a 87 Four Winns with the 4.3l omc.. I only paid a grand for it.. Needed a trim motor and it is on its way as of this message.. The sea trial( really the river trial) is set up for next Sunday.. I know its a holiday and everyone and their uncle will be running around. Makes easier for a tow eh? lol
Anyhow people been asking me what HP engine it has.. Well darn I am not 100% sure.. So I was wondering if anyone may know.. It has a little Rochester 2 barrel carb on it. I will try and answer any other questions needed for the answer.. I been thinking 175hp, but not sure if that's correct.. My friend said it is basically a 350 with the two front cylinders cut off.. Is that correct? I am not a GM gearhead so I don't know much about specs on em.. Is this a pretty hardy engine for a boat? I wanted a 3.0, but hey the price was right.. Feel free to check out my pictures or friend me on here if we have the same engine or boat brand..

Re: The 4.3l omc

hi,
my 4.3 liter mercruiser vintage 1986 has a 2bbl. carb on it and is rated at 185 hp. 4.3 is a 350 with front two cylinders lopped off.
good luck and have fun

No a 4.3 is a 5.7 (350) with cylinders 3&6 removed. Trust me.

The 175 to 180 HP should be about right on that vintage 4.3

Well it seems to run like a champ.. This isn't my first rodeo and I know they only run good, if they run good in the lake.. The fella I got it from was a pretty nice guy and I don't think would screw me knowingly..
I am figuring that that little V6 is going to make that 17ft boat scoot... 175hp sounds good to me..
I don't think the engine is a vintage as the Tub... I think he did a engine replacement once... Now the outdrive.. Looks vintage.. Thanks for the replies

Re: The 4.3l omc

As you can see in my sig below I have a similar rig that is a few years newer.

I've been told the HP is 175 to 195- -HP doesn't appear to be an exact science.

Other than the lower shift cable I haven't had any problems with the OMC Cobra. I keep the gear oil and impeller changed and she has been a very reliable outdrive over the past 5 years.

The 4.3? Not so much. Bought her with a cracked block and put in a remanned long block. Two seasons later the crank splits at the number 1 cylinder. In went another crank and she has been running fine this season. (It seems to help if I talk dirty to her every once and a while.).
