Oldjeep, the way you describe the switch hook-up for the bilge pump is a recipe for disaster. The float switch should be independent. I have one that the dash switch is either "manual" or "auto" and "manual" runs the pump; "auto" is on stand-by to be triggered by the float--just a placebo for "off" but really on!

an exception, of course, for a very small boat with an open floor design (no bilge).

I think the reason they come wired like that is that the majority of small runabouts live on trailers not in slips. If mine actually lived in a slip, I'd change it.

Thats how mine is, even if the switch is OFF it still kicks on with the float. Its actually wired directly to the battery and not through the battery selector switch so even if your batteries are shut off it'll still run.

Now that I think I about it I'd better check my float since it'll be in the water friday - monday this weekend!
