Hello, I recently found this info that helped me diagnose an ignition issue on my older Johnson. Thought it was worth sharing for those attempting to rule out ignition issues without the need to unnecessarily replace parts. Sorry if this isn’t the location to post the links but I found them useful.

Good post. I just got a 75 15hp running and all it needed was a re-gap. I filed the points while the flywheel was off but the main problem was the rich / lean low idle needle was seized in the seated position. I had to open the top half of the airbox and use a pair of pliers to open it up. One and a half turns later she started right up.

The 9.5 in the video and the 75 15 hp do NOT have the same ignition. The Universal Magneto 73 and earlier and the low tension magneto 74 and up do not work the same. So be careful which ignition is being tested.
