I have a 1967 Evinrude that hasn't run for 7 years. A couple years ago a dealer told me it had a bad stator. Now I am considering fixing it myself, but the part costs $200+ so I need to be sure that is the problem.

Re: Test for bad stator

Also, get a can of WD40 and water muffs for the water intake. Spray the WD40 directly into the carbs while attempting to start.
If it coughs sputters or starts, it's not the stator. Just make sure the bowls are drained on the carbs first,as they got goo in them instead of gas.
You'll have to do this anyway,as it has been sitting so long.
