Hey all,
Any recommendations on water temp and pressure gauges and sending units? I'm looking to fit out my motor with both as well as keep the tell tale I previously installed. I'm planning on connecting the pressure sending unit through the fitting towards the bottom of the motor near the exhaust cover and the temp sending at the top near the t-stat with a splitter so I keep the tell tale.
Thanks in advance

Make sure the temperature gauge reads low enough. If you use a standard analog automotive type with a needle, they usually start out at 100?F or 120?F. Force motors run at about 130?F - 140?F. The needle will barley move if you use one of these.

There are some digital gauges that will read low enough, but you want to make sure that they are bright enough to see in bright sunlight.

Jerryjerry, It's a 1988 85 HP. I'm looking to hook the pressure gauge at the 1" pipe plug at the bottom of the motor, just below the exhaust cover. At least I will try to hook it up there but its kinda hard to get to. Can't do a pic as the boats about 2 hours from me at the moment. Pnwboat, any recommendations on specific gauges? Good point on the sunlight issue. I recall from previous posts that you installed similar gauges... They work good? Which ones would you recommend?

Here is where I hooked up my water pressure fitting. There is a pipe plug in the water passage that feeds the block from the water pump in the Power Head adapter plate located just below the exhaust cover (1988 125HP motor). I removed the square head pipe plug and installed a brass fitting/elbow. Really tough to get to. I believe I had to remove the lower pan bolts so I could shift it over to get enough room to install it. Put a small black tie wrap around the hose to secure it. Has been working fine for the past 5 years or so.

As far as the water temp. gauge, just be aware of the normal operating temperature range (130?-140?) and that it comes with a 1/8" 27 NPT matching sending unit. Buying the gauge from one source and the sending unit from another may be a bad decision as the temp. range you're looking for is not very common.

I see just over 22lbs of water pressure at WOT @ 5800 RPMs. Keep that in mind when looking at pressure gauges.

I selected analog gauges with needle pointers with the appropriate temp. and pressure range so that when everything is running normal, the needles are pointed pretty much straight up. That way it's easier to just glance at them and see that everything is OK. I don't have to look at the specific numbers. You can also rotate the gauges to get the same effect, except it looks a little goofy.
