Hey guys,
I have had some issues with my teleflex cable steering. I launched the boat late this summer (7/11) and had to un-freeze the steering arm in the tilt tube before putting my boat in its slip for the summer. I did this with a heat gun and some brute force and was able to free up the steering enough to drive the boat from the ramp to my slip - after a week of bad weather, when I went to take it out, the steering is completely locked up again. I am trying to fix it in the slip as I can't even drive it back to the ramp at this point.
I have disconnected the cable and the steering arm to the engine and am trying to drive the steering arm/cable all the way through the tilt tube by inserting different length bolts into the tilt tube and hammering on it. I have gotten the cable most of the way out but now it is almost hitting the side of the hull and I am worried it will start bending the rod at the end of the cable. My plan is to drive it all the way out so I can clean it out with a solvent/gun cleaning brush, apply marine grease and re-connect everything. Does this sound like a good plan? I plan on replacing the tilt tube at some point but I just want to get back out on the water without hauling the boat out. From what I can tell, the cable is still in good condition - when I disconnect the bolt on the starboard side of the engine it's able to move freely when I turn my steering wheel. Thanks.
