Never posted on here before but thought I would start with a topic that I am working on now.

I am restoring a few things on my 1994 wellcraft 238 ccf and want to replace the side cushions which are torn and rotted with teak wood. I know teak is a type of oily wood used on boats, but I haven't been able to find the size and shape I need anywhere. Does anyone know of a similar type of wood I can cut finish and install? or a good source of teak? I am putting in a few pictures

Welcome to iBoats!
White Oak or Mahogany both stand up well to Marine use. Use a good Oil based stain, color of your choice and then several coats of a good marine varnish, I like Epifanes...

Will last for several seasons, and then you will just need to touch up the varnish.

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: teak-replacing rail cushion questions

Maybe I am confused. Are you talking about the wood that the Upholstery is attached to? If so, it is NOT teak. It IS plywood. You only need to use Exterior grade plywood and coat it with a couple of coats of Epoxy and it will last longer than you will have the boat. I thought you were talking about replacing the side cushions with just wood rails. That's a BIG "DUH" on my part!!!

Yeah I bet that is just marine ply under the upolstry.

I am a little unclear on the question. Are you looking to return the upolsrty to original or replace it with teak boards? I think Woodonglass thought, as I did when I first read this, that you were looking to replace it with teak. I agree with Wood, if that's what you meant. He knows his stuff.

If you are replacing with upolstry just use exterior ply coated with resin (plus maybe a thin veil of cloth) as the backer board.

Re: teak-replacing rail cushion questions

Thanks for the replies..for clarification I have removed the foam rails down to the fiberglass and am wanting to install wood rails where the foam had been.

I want to cut wood to fit and mount wooden rails where that foam is in the photos and did not know what certain type of wood and finish would be best.

thanks for the replies

In that case, my first post is the way to go. Either of those woods would be a good choice.

Just to throw out another solution here..

Unless your dead set on replacing the bolsters with wood.. You could just glass and fill the holes.. then gelcoat and sand/polish to blend with the rest of your interior.

Less cost and less maintenance.

YD.
