Re: TD-20 Coils?

For my purposes, it's probably good enough if I can go by model numbers and switch out condensers for my old stuff. Your point about voltage rating tells me these OB condensers must have a pretty specialized application, and that says it would be good to be cautious -- got to believe I could probably switch between different OB makers, as long as I can get enough info to compare ratings. Thanks.

Starcraft -- sorry for the hijack. Think there is a chance, though, that you could replace condensers if you need to.

Re: TD-20 Coils?

Well, I just spent an hour re-cleaning the points and going over all the solder joints and at this point all I did was make the bottom cylinder fire consistently. The solder joint to that coil's ground lead was giving me a bit of resistance so I cleaned both sides, as well as dismounted the coils after cleaning all points of contact.
I tested the coils with an ohmmeter and got 8 ohms on both primary sides, and 4750 +/- .03 ohms on the secondary side.
Both coils were identical. I didn't have an analog voltmeter handy so what I did was switch the condensers side to side and that made no difference.
What I did realize though is that the top cylinder is firing slightly, there's enough of a charge in that plug lead to make you jump but not enough to jump more than a few thousandths of an inch.
What I found out is that the top cylinder's spark gains strength with more RPM, if I start the motor, it runs on the lower cylinder only, then as I give it gas, the top cylinder starts to fire. If I really rip on the recoil, I can make the top cylinder fire the plug, but barely.
I put an inline spark tester on the wire and can watch the spark come on around 2500 rpm.
I'm not sure if that's a sign of a weak magnet or a bad coil? Its not the condenser because either condenser will work fine with the other coil.
The plugs in it are J8J. The wires are solid core and in good shape.
The good part is that it runs as is, the carb and tank didn't seem affected by age or sitting, and it pumps water. I found two spare impellers wire tied to the fuel line under the lower shroud but the one in it is working for now.
