Re: Tarpon......

hello<br /> after returning recently from a tarpon fishing trip to Rio Chico venezuela I can honestly say that the tarpon is about the easiest fish I ever threw a lure at to get a strike(5 to 25 pound class)about the only other fish I ever saw so eager to take a bait may be a blue gill.<br /> however I also found that the Tarpon (sabalo) is the absolute hardest fish to keep on that Lure. I am 6 ft tall and standing on the boat seat several went eye level with me within 10 feet of the boat. 2nd lesson that day is when the lure dislodges that close you have no time to duck it :) :) . I spent a total of 5 days fishing in and around the tacarauga state park. probably set the hook on 120to 150 a day. with a large amount of snook (robalo) thrown in. my fiance and I are going to start a business moving fisherman in and out of the area. she already owns an apt there as well as in caracas.<br /> while the tarpon in that area are not huge the fishing can be non stop.<br /> :)

I've herd similar things rodbolt. I talked to a guy that called'em "garbage cans" cause they'll take whatever ya throw at 'em.<br /><br /><br />He also in the same breath said, similar to what you stated, "however I also found that the Tarpon (sabalo) is the absolute hardest fish to keep on that Lure."<br /><br />I MUST experience this! btw - good luck with your new venture. :) <br /><br />ddaigle- how things been in your neck of the woods?<br /><br />Mr Ladyfish- heard anything more yourself down there?

Re: Tarpon......

There were a few caught off the beachfront in late Sept. Those reports brought out a bunch of weekend fishermen in Oct. but the fish weren't exactly plentiful. Most were caught about a mile offshore while trolling. We were going to give it a try one day but after going through the pass decided to go snapper fishing first. By the time we got out 30 miles, fished for 4 hours and drove back we said to heck with it and headed home. I have made up my mind to try it when it warms up.

Well alphabet63 that would definatly be a "tarp-on" as opposed to a "tarp-off" where you leave it in the garage. :D

Re: Tarpon......

Hey Barlow, No Tarpon here now. Will probably start showing up around April. I've been practicing with my new fly rod, caught a few trout and snappers. What a blast!, cant wait to tie into a Tarpon. Baby Tarpon in tropical locales may be easy to hook, but not the big boys here. I've seen schools of over a 100 fish and threw everything at them including live bait and never had a bite. They can be very finicky. As for hard to keep hooked, I'm 3 landed for 33lost! About average. Although we have a guy here who landed 30 on a fly rod this year! He owns a fly shop here and the Texas Tarpon record on a fly, 175 pounds! Regards

Definetly echo the need to go to Boca Grande. When the tarpon are running through the pass. It's hard to find a spot to get it....It's not to bad down by the 10K isles either....i was fishing for snook with LW tackle and ended up getting spooled out by a 100+ pounder....It's a hell of a fight.
