take off heads or not

1973 johnson 135hp v4 crossflow
I'm debating whether or not to take off the heads to inspect the cooling restrictors, rings and cylinders and replace the gasket and torque it to spec. The downside is twisting off a bolt. The boat had lived all but its last 2 years in fresh water and I suspect the heads have never been off.
1)Should the head bolts be backed off and retorqued on a maintainence schedule?
2)Should the headbolts and head gasket be replaced on a maintainence schedule?
3)Is there a method to avoid twisting off a bolt? I am thinking wd-40 for a week first and using a torque wrench to some max torque to loosen the bolts, and maybe rigging the wrench to apply that torque load overnight.

I'm asking for unnecessary trouble here arent I. The other side is that I want to keep the engine servicable. Thanks for your comments

I've allways been taught from the school of "if it aint broke, don't fix it". I would run frequent compression tests on it (plug-changing time), and as long as compression is within spec, leave sleeping dragons lie.
When u gotta rip-n-tear, well that's the time to see what gives. And there are allways helicoils :)
9 outta 10 times, you can "feel" a bolt that's going to shear off when using a regular bar.
WD40,and an impact wrench set on it's lowest tourqe setting is the best way to get them out whole tho.

I agree with 12F, why go through all that? If there's compression, leave it alone.

How about the retorquing? Do the head gaskets dry out and loosen up over time?

hello SCO

If that puppy has thermostats like the later family of V4's, you'd be better off spending your time servicing those. They seem to go unattended on most engines......

just a thought......

Rodger on that Schematic. Got one and that will be part of this winters service. Will leave the head gasket for another day. My tendency is to want to rebuild the whole thing, replace every wire, hose and coil and gasket to make it perfect. Thanks for the input 12, Mike.

Bfore you set out on a major overhaul source your parts first. Johnson is probably no problem but I have trouble getting parts for my old Suzuki. Working in the electronics repair trade I have a theory that on old machines the part most likely to fail is the most recently replaced. The others must be good to have lasted so long. I bet if it doesn't look deteriorated it will be at least as reliable as a new one
Cheers
