Tachometer Mercury Classic 50

[Basstech]

I've got a 1986 BassTracker Tournament TX-17 with a Mercury Classic 50 (45hp) outboard. It has the factory installed tachometer. Recently the tach has not been registering rpms. How can I test the tach to see if it needs to be replaced? If replacement is required what is preferred model to install and how do I go about it. Thanks.

Hi Basstech<br /><br />Make sure the charging system is working before you replace the Tach. If the charging system is not working, neither will the Tach. Get a voltage reading on the battery when not running and compare that to running at about 2000RPM's. If no difference, look for it to be a charging problem most likely with the regulator/rectifier... Let us know what happens...BTW: What year motor are we talking about?(Assuming 86' model) Serial number is helpful, too...

Charging system is working fine last time I looked.<br />Serial number for 86' model Mercury Classic 50 (45hp) is OA916323.<br /><br />Where would the regulator/rectifier be located? On engine coil? or near Tach on dash?<br /><br />Thanks for your help.

On the left hand side as you look at the front, bolted to the alloy plate under the cowl near the starter solenoid.
