I HAVE A MERCURY BLACK MAX 135HP OUTBOARD MOTOR, I HAVE TWO PROBLEMS 1) MY TACHOMETER JUST STOPPED WORKING,SHOWS NOTHING. 2)I GET ALOT OF SMOKE WHEN I AM AT IDLE SPEEDS OR JUST SITTING. IS IT THE OIL TYPE, OR IS THE MIXTURE TO RICH OR SOMETHING I AM NOT SEEING.

Re: TACHOMETER and SMOKE

1 I would suspect a defective tach, or the wiring therto, because if it were the pickup, the engine would run rough or not at all.

2,All 2-cycle outboards will smoke. Some oils produce smoke more than others, and as fuel ages in the tank, it becomes stale, and the ratio of oil to gas goes up.
Penzoil,Valvoline and Lubrimatic natural oils seam to smoke more than the others to my experiance. Quicksilver and WallMart's Supertech2000 naturals seam to smoke the least (again, from what I have seen).
Have you decarbed the engine lately? That carbon can glom-up return systems and internals (ring lands, exaust ports and such) in less then 60 hours...Less on the "smokey oils".
Anyhoo, if you haven't and plan on doing it, be forwarned, it will smoke like a mosquito fogger at the drive-in while you are decarbing, and for an half-hour afterwards.
But the increase in compression and performance can be shocking sometimes.
And another side effect, it will smoke less, as it has less carbon, which adds alotta smoke as it tries to burn.
Just my opinion.
