Tach issues

I must have read every topic on this website, but I cannot figure what I'm doing wrong. I have a brand new teleflex tach and I hooked it up +/- power and the sender is going to the gray wire in the control box. I also tried to hook the sender up directly to the yellow and the yellow/gray wire on the motor. I got no reading at all either time. Any ideas on what I can check?

Purple is switched 12 volts, black is ground and grey is pulse. Set tach to 6. The fourth post on the tach is for instrument light bulb.

Thanks for the reply. I do not have the purple wire, I have the tach directly connected to the battery. I assumed that this was adequate, please let me know if I am incorrect. I tried the sender wire to the gray wire in the control box as well as the yellow and the yellow/gray wires on the motor. I have no reading at all on the tach. I am looking for any suggestions on things to try. Thanks
