I recently bought my first boat. It' a 2003 16' 7" G3 V167C with a Yamaha 50TLRA outboard. It has no gauges in it and i was hoping to install a tach. Could any of you give me some pointers about the wiring.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Tach for outboard

Welcome to iboats!

If the boat has an instrument panel, the wiring to the proper terminal on the motor may already be there. Here's a generic wiring diagram for instruments, courtesy of Guru Silvertip:

Re: Tach for outboard

Thanks for the information. Am i correct that the tach pulse signal comes from one of the coils?
Many thanks and happy boating.

Re: Tach for outboard

The tach signal usually comes from the stator. The wire is often gray.

Re: Tach for outboard

would that gray wire be found in the engine compartment or at the remote?

It should be in the remote. If not, there may be a terminal labeled "Tach" under the motor cowl.

Re: Tach for outboard

I searched the engine compartment and didn't see any wires marked "tach" So i was going to look inside the remote but i don't see a good way to get it apart. There are 3 phillips head screws that come in the front of the remote but they must have nuts on the back that i can't figure how to get to.remote.jpg

It may have a drop out cable and plug or a plug socket on the controler. Just depends.

Re: Tach for outboard

I did finally locate a harness coming out of the remote. It has 4 wires they are as follows.
Red- Constant hot
Black- Ground
Yellow- Hot with key in run position
Green- Hot while engine is cranking

Is this the harness that the tach would connect to??
Many thanks
Tom
