I have a 1995 Merc mariner 40 hp 2 stroke. My tach was acting stupid, bouncing around, showing over revving readings and so on. Then last week when I was out, I had charging issues. The reading in this forum I have done says it can be the rectifier. Other stuff I have come across says it can be the voltage regulator with the 5 wires coming out of it. I did notice some brown stuff that looked like something burnt under the protective plastic it is sealed in.
Does anyone know where I should start. Can either one of these be tested.
