System Check Conversion - Oil Tank Sender Question

I am converting my 1990 Johnson 150 to system check a piece at a time. I've got everything except a new oil tank sender.

My question is, why do I need to replace it?

What's different between the old float switch and the system check version?

Re: System Check Conversion - Oil Tank Sender Question

The old tank sender had electronics in it (which had a lot of probs) which won't work on system check. The system check sender had just an on/off switch in it.

If you visually check the oil level in the tank often, then there is no need to buy and hook up a different pickup assembly for your SystemCheck.

Thanks for the replies.

I will take a close look at my sender and either modify it or get a new one.

Frequent checking of the oil level is always a good idea but I like the idea of having a back up just in case. (as long as it's reliable.)

Re: System Check Conversion - Oil Tank Sender Question

I received an answer to my question on another forum and it was that the only difference between the system check version and the older version is a different connector.

Could both answers be correct - that the system check version has a different connector and does not have whatever electronics was in the old version??

Yes. The system check version also had different color coding on the tank wires.

That is not a correct answer - the '95 and older tanks had the electronics circuitry for the 30 second beep delay inside the pickup assembly. The '96 and newer tanks (for SystemCheck) only have the float switch as all the warning electronics are inside the System Check gauge.

Yes - both types of tanks have different connectors on them and the earliest tanks from the '80s had different ones yet.

OK, thanks again.

If I am unable to modify it, I'll get a new sender.

Re: System Check Conversion - Oil Tank Sender Question

In case anyone might like to know, it is possible to modify the oil tank sender to convert it to system check. Here's how:
1. Remove the sender from the tank and remove the top of sender unit by unscrewing the two screws on the bottom of it. You will have to pry the top off.
2. Dig out the potting compound over the one nut and wire lug that connects the non-grounded side of the sensor. (you can tell which is which with a meter). The non-grounded side has two wire lugs connected to it.
3. Remove the nut, wire lugs and insulated washer.
4. Cut the white wire and discard the small wire lug
5. Place two 1/4" SS star washers over the black sleeve and put the big wire lug back on and secure the nut back down.
6. Re pot the area with some oil resistant sealant of your choice.
That's it. Now the connections to the sender are directly across the electrodes bypassing the electronic circuitry.
