Re: synchronization question

Ok, so I just got back in. I put a carb kit and pump in the 65 and fixed the same issue you had with a roll pin. The thing started first pull and idled like a dream. I took notice at the timing marks and it was a little closer to the cam roller but not much, I'm talking an 1/8 of an inch. I saw no obvious way if getting it spot on, there was nothing to bend. I guess the question is, is the idle needle on your motor set to exactly what it should be for trolling? The other issue is the plug, I know the original called for J4J which is now J4C which is a cold plug. The champion site calls for J8C's which is too hot in my opinion, why don't you try running J6C's in it, it won't hurt anything and may elimate your fouling. I know Mercury motors from the 50's and 60's called for J6C's to eliminate fouling at trolling speeds and I've never heard of a motor being taken out by a slightly hotter plug.

I set the slow speed idle screw till I got best idle. If I turn it in anymore the motor will hiccup. If you look at my pictures of the cam roller I would bend that linkage foward a bit which would let the armature plate advance further, thus bringing the mark closer to the center of the roller. I really should replace the plug wires also, maybe Im not getting good spark at idle.

The cam roller on the motor I was working on was bent as well , I bent it back, try it but I'd hate for you to break something.

I just cant figure out any other way to get the roller to line up with the mark. Do you have a p/n for the plug wires? I would like to do those also.

Re: synchronization question

There is no part number, it's just solid core plug wire available off the roll, your dealer should sell it by the foot, you make em using the old boot and end , they twist into the coils.

Thank you for your help. I will try the hotter plug also. I will update this thread if I come up with anything ground breaking.

Re: synchronization question

So I played with the linkage to get the marks lined up and the motor didnt like it, not enough fuel. So I put it back the way it was, got it running and tuned the low speed mixture screw and idle. It seems to idle now w/o loading up. I think the main problem was the slop in the tilller handle from the broken part. I also get wot now:)

Question for bttheking: I checked the plugs after it idled for awhile, they didnt look bad but a little oily which would be expected. Would you still bump up the a j6c plug? thanks.

Re: synchronization question

A little oily should be ok, run a little hotter if you'd like, I think you found your issue.

Re: synchronization question

Well I took the boat to the lake yestrday and it ran great. I still used the j4c plugs and I ran a new brand of 2 cycle oil( pennzoil synthetic blend). I was using the regular mercury oil before and I must say the pennzoil just has a better consistencywhen pouring. I noticed less smoke also.
