It appears that the drive shaft is corroded into the drive coupler. The only way the shaft can be removed is to cut the shaft behind the drive coupler then the engine can be removed to replace the coupler and of course the drive needs to be repaired.

Wow. I have nothing to add. When was the last time your drive was off?

Remove the pinion gear retainer screw using a FTX-500 Torx bit. Then you should be able to pull it off the splined bit of the UJ.
I believe you can then remove the pivot housing to give you some clearance to get some penetrating fluid in the gimbal bearing area which I expect is what is holding things together. From that point I expect brute force will be needed to get the gimbal bearing out. This will save you having to remove the engine.
Alternatively take the whole outfit to a good Marine workshop. :)

The only way to separate the shaft from the engine is either a cutting torch or an abrasive saw blade on a reciprocating power saw. Go ahead and try removing the gear as the previous post first. You might luck out.

Yep, your drive shaft is stuck in the coupler or gimble bearing so seized to the drive shaft and transom shield that it broke where it did. Not to beat you up but this is why drives need to be pulled annually, inspected, maintained and re-greased liberally.

How did you pry the drive back with such force that it busted the housing?

This is what comes back to bite I/O owners who don't do the maintenance. To be fair though it happens on outboards too, if you have to replace an impeller and the lower unit has never been dropped.

We Jammed the out drive to the transom shield with timber and trimmed up trying to use the pistons to pull the drive shaft out of the gimble, obviously some thing else gave and something is stuck quite fast

Thanks for that. I was thinking maybe I could drill
Out and tap for threads into the cover. Then using stud and some Chanel and nuts/washers I may be able to use them as a puller to get it out. I am suspecting the jam is in the pivot housing with corrosion on the shaft cover rather than gimble . Or have you had experience otherwise.
what’s the thoughts on my makeshift puller ? 🤙🏽

No way that the retainer is bound up in the pivot housing. As far as the bearing retainer that may be all you will need to repair the drive along with the seals.
I have had the fun of the drive shaft corroded in the coupler a few times when I had my shop. A real PITA. We used a cutting torch and a water hose to douse the area as it was cut.

Not sure why you don't want to remove the bearing housing from the UJ's?
it would allow you to put a chain around the back of the UJ's and use a slide hammer. The bellows needs to be dealt with, but that is the least of your problems! The pivot housing is just a couple of "Allen" bolts an earth strap and trim sensor. that would give you plenty of access.

A big Slide hammer (10 lb) or come along attched to a tree or hitch on a vehicle. Worst case a sawzall several blades and a young skinny guy to snake in there and cut the driveshaft so you can yank the engine ....
