SX-M Outdrive Pee Hole

Afternoon,

Two weeks ago I had problems at the boat ramp shifting out of reverse. I trailered the boat and after further inspection found my outdrive oil was low (not registering on dip stick). I drained approx. 2 quarts of oil out of the drive. Found some small metal flakes in the oil, nothing too serious. After adding my 2.2 quarts of oil back through the dip stick hole I noticed what appears to be gear oil leaking from the lower unit pee hole. The hole is on the port side forward of the prop. Thge boat was parked in the driveway so I know it was not leaking before I changed the oil. Did I do something wrong or do I have another issue? Thanks for any assistance.

2.2 quarts low means it was almost empty, and flakes on the drain plug is NEVER good. A black mush on the end of the magnet is ok, flakes are not.
I think you have some serious problems.

Is this the hole you was referring to? It's a drain hole so water doesn't fill the passage.

Yep, Don that is the hole. My niece also hit a submerged tree about a month ago that I did not mention in the original post.

Where did the 2.2 quart number come from? I just changed the oil in my sx-m and I swear it was closer to 3. You also pump the oil in from the bottom drain plug hole until it comes out of the level plug hole.

Sounds like you have damage to the prop shaft seal. Your prop shaft is probably slightly out of round and won't seal properly. Get it looked at.
