Walking back from the shop yesterday I heard a humming. The closer to house I get the louder it gets. Walk a couple steps into the woods and level increases. Never saw what it was but turned around and walked back out. I'm thinking hornets because of the lower drone pitch.

About 30 minutes later it was gone. Hope its long gone and not just, they found a home

Sounds like an entire bee hive looking for a new home.
(There are more different types of bee species than you can imagine.)
I see/hear them every year and hear more of them moving around in dryer years.

It is a dry year for us and noticed 7 different types of bees in just one Palo Verde tree last weekend.

Kind of on topic here . A neighborhood not far from me got blanketed !!
There was a lot of speculation on what it was ..

It was more than likely honey bees swarming. Most swarming takes place in April and May. It’s actually quite common. They swarm for two reasons. Most frequently they swarm because their hive has become too crowded and they split into two groups and one group stays and the other leaves and swarms. I’ve seen this numerous times , even had one swarm take up residence in my back yard. Should you have a swarm land in your yard just call a bee keeper. They’ll come out and gather them up and take them to a new hive.

I've been around a bee swam a few times. The sound was different in tone. One bee swarm settled in on a buddys car bumper. Bee keeper came out and gathered them up.
