Re: Suzuki DT65 - electrical problem

Welcome to iboats.
It could be, but a more-common cause would be fuel starvation. Unless the engine has a decisive miss to it, I would suspect the fuel delivery, from the fuel tanks to the reed box,in it's entirety.
Look for clogged filters, water in the fuel system, air leaks, tank venting, fuel pump, or stuck anti-syphon valves.

Re: Suzuki DT65 - electrical problem

Does the engine cut out completely or does it cut down in power suddenly giving the impression it's running on one cylinder less? I had a 55hp which would suddenly cut down in power under acceleration but if I throttled back and went again it usually would be fine. It turned out to be a sticky float switch in the power head which when activated engaged the rev-limiter. The switch is protecting the powerhead from overheating in the event of a damaged impeller or plugged water intake. The switch can be replaced in 2 minutes with a screwdriver.

Manito . . .

I have a 115 suzuki that is behaving exactly as you describe. I figure there was some trash in one of the carbs that was causing this, but your comments suggest that I should also look elsewhere. Where is the float switch in the powerhead that your refer to?

Re: Suzuki DT65 - electrical problem

Thanks for your input fellas,

I've checked the fuel supply and found it ok.
I still believe it to be an electrical problem.
There is no spark at the plug now. The motor was running perfectly on the first run out from the boat ramp and then after I had stopped the engine to do a bit of fishin' it started ok but stalled when accelerated (probably a dozen times)
I had to be towed in.
I thought perhaps there could be a sensor causing the problem. Can the CDI unit be damaged by leaving the ignition on? Ive left it on when tilting the motor on occasion.

Hi,
What Year was your Suzuki DT65 made?
I have a DT65 made in 1991.
I have the "Service Manual" for DT65 from 1986 to 1992. I can check if I find any usefull info in the Service Manual, but it might help if you tell what year your outboard was made.

/Bo

Re: Suzuki DT65 - electrical problem

My DT50 exibited the symptom and turned out to be bits of the hood liner foam disitegrating and entering the bowl vents. After repeated bowl cleaning and foam removal problem solved.

Re: Suzuki DT65 - electrical problem

outbdvstern:
Sorry I didn't reply to your question regarding the float switch earlier. I'm not sure where it would be on your engine but on mine if you look at the engine from behind with the coweling off it was on the right half of the powerhead toward the top left (looking at it from the side). If I remember correct it had only a single wire coming off of it and was attached by screws (phillips head. The sensor was about 2cm or 3/4inch in diameter. When removed it looks just like a float on the inside.
This this gave me fits with the engine until I replaced it. Some times I hit rough water or accelerated it would kick in the rev limiter until I would throttle back.
Good luck

Re: Suzuki DT65 - electrical problem

Thanks to all who responded to my problem,
I ended up taking it to a mechanic and he found it was a fuel problem after all. the boat has been sitting un used for about 12 months and he believes the rings are gummed up and the motor requires de carbonising.
It seems this is causing a reduction in compression and the motor is not sucking fuel into the cylinders.
He's given me an additive to put in the fuel and I have to take it for a long run on the weekend. Not too hard to take. any thing to get away from the redecorating.
Anyhoo,
thanks all
