Hi, I have the opportunity to pick up the below motor at what seems to be a good price. The pix look clean despite coming from out salty area (San Diego). Before I run over to look at it, I'd like to see if I could get a bit of information from this group. I reallize I could probably dig through the archives and dig this info out bit by bit, but if you guys have a moment to answer, I'd be stoked. For what it's worth, this would be a deviation from my comfort zone which are 90s Nissan 2-strokes 9-15 HP. Thanks

1)Can anyone estimate the year of this motor? I know the graphics changed pretty regularly on the Suzuki's, so maybe someone could propose a range?

2)Is the oil injection system something that can be tinkered with by a reasonably handy person with the shop manual? I can handle carbs, fuel pumps etc. Basically, should I be afraid of the injection system.

3)Are parts available for motors of this vintage? Carb kits, Water pump kits etc...

Re: Suzuki 9.9 general questions.

I don't think i've ever seen a white Suzuki except for the older models. The paint does look factory or they did a good job repainting it. Suzuki's are generally black or light silver. The sticker on the cowl looks to be from the late 80's early 90's. If it has been re-painted it was probably due to salt erosion. Check inside the lower cowl and see if its completely white or any other area that would be hard to paint with a rattle can.

I don't see an oil reservoir so it might not be oil injected. If it is oil injected there is probably a thread in here somewhere that will show you how to disconnect it or if you should actually do it.

Parts are readily available although kinda expensive from Brownspoint Marina. You can also get the model # and check out the year on their website.

Re: Suzuki 9.9 general questions.

Great little motors. White is the original color. Look at the 6 digit stamped serial number..1st digit is the model year. 1988 (first year for that motor) would start with 8xxxxx, a 1990 would be 0xxxxx, 1993 is 3xxxxx etc. Oil injection is practically foolproof..don't disconnect. Oil caps tend to shrink and leak and need replacement, oil level sending unit gets loose and leaks..silicone RTV will cure that. Thermostats get sticky with lack of use and should be cleaned out just for principle. All parts are available.

Thank you for your feedback! Much appreciated. He wants $300 and says it runs strong. Sounds like a solid deal no?

$300 is a good buy.
If its on Craigslist you better jump on it. That motor would have been sold in the first hour on Craigslist here in NorCal.

Check for corrosion in hard to get places just in case he scraped the easy to get stuff off and repainted it.
