Hello all (newbie here),
I recently purchased a 1987 Grumman 14 1/2 ft GFS that came with the Suzuki 8 HP 2 stroke. No manual.
The boat and motor haven't seen a lot of use, but neither have they seen much maintenance or service.
Im going through the lower unit and changing the grease, replacing the water pump impeller, etc. I noticed these markings and screws above the lower unit grease screws.( See pic) can anyone tell me exactly what these are for? I'm assuming it's not for the lower unit grease because those fill holes are well defined and obvious.
It seems like Huile means "oil" in french, lavage (again in french) means "washing out". What is going on here, are there two oil reservoirs in this lower unit ? Also I have no owner's manual for service manual for this motor.

There is but one oil compartment.-----I believe the flush screw is for an adapter to attach a garden hose.-----See if the oil drain hole and upper oil hole are connected.-----Outboard lower units are filled from the bottom till oil comes out the top " vent " hole.

Thanks Racerone. I have owned outboards before so I'm familiar with the lower unit filling procedure but I've just never seen anything like this before.

where do you think you need to hook up fresh water to wash out / flush the motor?

finding an owner's manual and service manual would be a good thing

Well that's just it... I'm not sure.
I'm considering pouring an once or so of kerosene in the very top hole that says oil to see where it comes out.
Manuals would be helpful but I've yet to find any. Only had the motor a couple days

So...
It all seems so obvious now!
The bottom screw hole of course is the fill/drain port.
The second from bottom screw hole is like a secondary bleeder hole. Did not start leaking oil until the very top hole started leaking oil.
Third from the bottom screw,"flush/Lavage"means exactly what it says, it is a water flush. I would imagine for a saltwater application.
The top screw hole was the full indicator.
The unit took about 2/3 quart.
Now all I am waiting on is new spark plugs and my water pump rebuild kit, and spring here in Michigan.
Next is floors, paint, wiring, etc for the boat itself. I'll start a new thread for that.

One final thing the motor is in pretty good shape for an 87

No such thing as a "secondary bleed screw" - that screw is part of the shift mechanism.

You may very well be correct, and I don't know enough to debate one way or the other.All I know is that is a very short screw which barely penetrates the housing it doesn't attach anything inside.

You were absolutely right.
That screw is a stop for the linkage. It keeps it from going too high or too low. A big help when connecting the linkages.
