i have a 1990 70 horse johnson outboard OMC.as i was running a loud noise appeared. so i shut it off right away. after it shut down i turned the key(not turning the motor on) and the noise was still there. 2 hrs later the noise was gone and it ran fine. anyone have a clue what it might be???

Definitly an OVERHEAT alarm.

When was the last time the water pump was changed?

When was the last time the thermostat's were serviced?

If none of these have been serviced recently, I would have it done immediatly!

Was the water intakes blocked with seaweed or some other debris?

(Plastic bags in the water have caused many a motor to expire well before their time.)

You most likely had something blocking the intakes, and when you stopped, the debris came off.

A water temperature gauge is quite possibly the one gauge that all boats should have, but most boats do not have one.

I would suggest installing one!

Kenny
