I have an older Bennington with its original carpeted floor. I will need to replace it in a year or so and I'm beginning to think of options. I usually have a boat full of small barefoot children, so here are my requirements:
  • Floor can't be slippery for bare feet wet or dry
  • Floor can't get too hot for bare feet under summer Alabama sun
  • Floor must accept cleaning with lake water from a washdown hose
  • Floor must not be overly prone to mold buildup
  • Expected lifetime at least six years with six months outdoors each year
Carpet like the original would probably work. Does anyone know of a different floor covering that meets all these requirements? If not, what floor covering what you recommend and which requirements would it NOT meet?

Tommy I used a padded vinyl (similar to a wet suit) that feels great under your bare feet, but it's pattern is aggressive enough where you don't want to crawl around on it with your bare knees. It does get hot, and it's expensive. Nearly a thousand for our 24'. It looks great, and at 3 years appears to be holding up well. It gets a light bath in the spring, when it's uncovered, using car wash detergent (wash and wax), and hasn't need much more attention. We raised the fencing up 1/2" or so as part of that project, one of the best moves I made. A lot of dirt is literally blown overboard.

I've since done an alum. deck boat using vinyl. It was much less expensive, but only comes in 6' width. It's more along the lines of what Starcraft used in their boats for years, if You're familiar with those. In the Starcraft's, it holds up really well. I'll dig for a link if you're interested. -Al

The new flooring on my project will be a " glue in product "------The stuff gets computer printed / cut graphics on it.-----Name of the boat , kids favourite toy , kids names , favourite saying or whatever.

I like carpet except for the logevity and subsequent work needed to replace it. I'm thinking hard about finishing the traveled area with snap-in carpet pieces cut and bound to fit. That way they're easy to replace when needed. I'd like to know if anyone here has tried that.

The only issue I see with snapped down carpet sections is how to control moisture under them. You'd almost have to pull them up after every boating session to allow that area to dry, no?

I was considering something like this instead of marine carpet on my entire deck.

That's great stuff. Waterprrof, soft on the feet, doesn't get hot in the sun, easy to clean.

The bad part - extreme durability. You need to wear soft shoes, don't drop sharp stuff on it, and whatever you do don't take a dog along. Toe nails will tear it up.

Yep, bare feet or those water shoes, no tools, don't own a dog and the wife keeps my toe nails trimmed so I don't cut her up in my sleep.

  • Engineered Wood. Engineered wood flooring looks just like solid wood, but it's made in a different way.
  • Bamboo.
  • Ceramic Tile.
  • Laminate.
  • Vinyl.
  • Linoleum.
  • Cork.

white line-x XS650 - developed for center console fishing boats off the florida coast by Line-X of Sarasota (available at any Line-X installation center). cleans easy, wont slip when wet (or covered in fish goo), wont mold and will last longer than 6 years

Awesome Scott, thanks.
I also will be looking into that.
Wonder if it comes in other colors or can be mixed in?

In 2012 I painted the top of my plywood with Tuff Coat and raised the side rails a half inch. Yesterday I just took a wet mop and some Totally Awesome to the furniture and then Totally Awesome and a broom to the deck. Rinsed everything down with a garden hose. All of the work that I did in 2012 paid off by making this job easy.

That's Marideck. Its a competitor to Nautolex. It is the OEM floor covering for Alumicraft, Starcraft, et al. I had it on my last boat and after 35 years it still looked like new. When I upgraded my old Starcraft by adding a floor I bought a roll of the stuff from ***** along with the adhesive. I loved that stuff, and it was also quite inexpensive.
