I have a unit which has some problems with the thrust plate/gears for reverse- what it does is it will pop out of reverse, due too much throwing it in & out of reverse while backtrolling. I had it looked at and I would need to replace this matched set of plates or gears in the lower unit(about $500-$600 just for the set of parts). Am I better off trying to find a lower unit to replace or rebuild the current one?

it is trolling with the motor in rev. and sometimes to control the right amount of speed you put in and out of rev to regulate speed. It normally would not cause that much problem, this motor had been used by a fishing guide who used that method quite a bit and so, it was worn more than a normal fisherman (like me) could only hope I got to fish that much. Anyway I had gotten a price to rebuild of $1600 and it appears a replacement new LU would be about $2200. I guess I am also looking for places to look for either a used or rebuilt LU instead of rebuilding mine. You'd think it would be easier but I do not have a lot of luck finding prices or places which have the LU.
