Engine is a low hour rebuilt 1982 evinrude 115 v4 (though i suspect previous owner reused many parts). Recently got the boat out of winter storage and it fired right up in the driveway, let it run for 10 min or so to check the temps/leaks etc. All good. Sat for 2 weeks and then i started it up again for a quick check before heading down to the lake. ran for 2 min then suddenly rpms dropped and it was missing like crazy. it would barely idle and sometimes just die.
After some basic checks (compression, fuel, loose wires) i noticed 2 right side cylinders were cool and not getting any spark while left were warm. Power pack on that side looked really old and the other side has a newer one. Switched them around and the no spark followed the older power pack. Ordered a new one but it had me thinking, i guess it could just fail from old age but can something upstream cause it to burn up? Pulled the flywheel and noticed the stator had a few spots where it had cracks and had oozed some black goo. No idea how long its been like that. Ran great all last season and even for the first start of this year. I'm thinking it needs replaced? i might as well replace the rectifier since it could be the cause of the stator issue based on the trouble shooting threads i have seen. Timer base had some dark marks on the inside but what could cause that? Heat from the stator or could something be wrong with it too? Ran great until the 2 cylinders stopped firing so don't really think anything is bad there. Battery is also newer, fully charged, and the connections in the boat were cleaned up when i got it out of storage so i don't think it was overworked and melted down.
Thanks for any advice. Still new to these engines.
