I had a friend that would use his 2 weeks vacation every year traveling from Wilson, NY to Alexandria Bay, NY. His first leg would be to the Irondequoit Bay, to meet up with his brother and his boat, and then the 2 boats go to the St. Lawrence. There were many years they ever made it past Rochester.
If you have the time to wait, maybe no problem. But if you are on a schedule and the weather turns bad you ain't gonna go.
The NY side of Ontario is the easy side. The north side is the windward side.
IMHO, July is the time to go in a boat that has already had it's shakedown cruise. But then again, if you had asked me the same question 55 years ago, I would not hesitate to have an adventure.
