I launched my boat and did not have the drain plug in and it wouldn't start when I got it out of the water but did when I got it home. Now it won't start I have put new points, plugs and distributor cap but it still won't start. I have a 1980 140 hp stern drive mercruiser and the water I believe got up to the distributor cap. What else can I do.null

Check for water in the crankcase.
Did the coil go under? If so,replace it.It is toast.

Remove the plugs, and turn the engine over a few seconds to expell water from cylinders just in case it got in.

Was the engine running when it went under?

The distributor has to be completely dry inside, as do the points.

Re: Stupid Drain plug out

Thank you I have not looked at the crankcase but will do so first thing in the morning. I don't think the coil got wet but is there a way for me to check and see if it is putting out the amps. I drained the boat before leaving the pier but it wouldn't start and about an hour later when I got home it cranked right up but I didn't run it very long. Any help is appreciated.

If it started at the house, the coil is ok.
Do check for water in the crankcase tho.
Was it saltwater? If so, you should maybe take it to a carwash, and rinse the salt off,to prevent the corrosion from starting.
But protect the distributor, air intake, and alternator from getting wet again.

Your U-joints and gimball bearing are likely to fail soon. By flooding your bilge, water enters via a vent hole into the u-joint bellows. Once it gets in there...it doesn't take long to wipe out gimball & u-joint.

Speaking from experience.

Walt

Re: Stupid Drain plug out

12footer I have now looked at fuel system and there is spark at the points and the fuel is okay. The engine still doesn't start but it tries to start but every so often it will backfire and the engine will pause. I am charging the battery tonight and would like try taking the starter off tomorrow do you think this is the next thing to do. When you say crankcase you do mean the oil pan don't you. There was water in the oil and I have drained the oil and added new oil and filter. what do you think is the next thing to do. I really appreciate your help and the other guys help also thanks a bunch.

Re: Stupid Drain plug out

The next step is to pull all the plugs. Label the plug wires as you remove them with masking tape and a laundry marker.
Shoot a one second burst of WD40 into each plug hole.

Next, remove the distributor cap,dry it out real good, and make sure there is no water under it.

Crank the engine for 5 seconds. wait 30seconds, and crank it again for 5. Do this a few times, putting a burst of WD40 into the plug holes.
Replace the plugs, plug wires, and give it a try.
Let us know how it goes.

Marty43! When you have all of the spark plugs out to see if there is any water in the cylinders you must crank the motor over to get any water out good luck!
Nick

Re: Stupid Drain plug out

Well guys I tried the WD40 and starting the engine with the plugs removed and it is still doing the same thing. I have not removed the starter yet but I was sitting here this morning and realizing that I might have gotten more in the gasoline then I thought. I travel doing week and I am only home on the weekends and the honey dews have to be done first. So if there are any Ideas I need the help. Thanks in advance guys.

This is what AMERICA is all about. I love this country and all it stands for.
