Stumbling on takeoff

I need some opinions about a holeshot problem on my 94 Evinrude Intruder 175. It is on a 19 foot Ranger 481. It cranks up and idles. When I put it in gear and and start forward it begins to bog down. If I slowly press my hot foot I am able to keep it cranked and the rpm gets to about 1000. If I pus in the key to activate the choke solenoid it most definitely perk up and I begin to move faster. I keep gradually doing this and at around 1500 rpm it seems to slowly get better and at 2100 rpm it smoothly revs up and puts me on plane where it runs smoothly. I have been dealing with this for awhile and it is progressively getting worse. I started however to use the key push in just this weekend and I saw it pep up each time. I had recently found warped carb bowls and I repaired that. My compression test was good and I am using oil from my tank to indicate that at least the oil side of the vro is working. I put some oil in my gas for protection. I am using Ql78yc Champion plugs set at .030. Because I had one available, I swapped out the power pack and the optical sensor with no improvement. I bought the Easy Timer and did a link and sink. My timing was set per the instructions sent with the Easy Timer and like I said I can crank and run at mid range and up. Just can't take off. Could the fuel side of my vro be causing my problems ?

I forgot to to put that for the first time this weekend I began to notice that the motor seems to surge slightly as if it is starving for something and then picking back up. This is while running across the lake at about midrange. I haven't seen it do this until yesterday afternoon. I had cleaned the carbs when recently too but had the same performance.

warped carb bowls or dirty carbs and throttle bodies.

Tilt motor just slightly.

Squeeze bulb til firm. Keep squeezing. Look for leaking fuel. Where do you see fuel?

I did have warped bowls and got that problem repaired. That fixed the fuel leak. I pump the bulb and sometimes it gets hard but at other times it just seems to be firm. I noticed that where the fuel line enters at the fuel cone shaped filter that the white filter hosing is transparent enough to see a fuel level through it that goes up and down as I pump the bulb. If I can see a fuel level then there must be air above the fuel. That isn't normal is it. Could that be a problem ?

I’m having the same problem but I have a 1995 150 intruder . If y’all find the fix could tell me . I think it’s the carbs

Racerone, could it be a leaking diaphragm inside the vro ? I have tried to find out about the vst ? Also, should I be seeing a fluid level in that cone filter housing ?

I am having same issue with mine.. I dont know much about the pumps on these motors I always thought it was a spark issue but everything has been replaced except stator. So if it is a fuel issue I would like to know also

This does not need to be so complicated. If the bulb does not get hard make sure you are starting with a known good bulb in a generally upright position with arrow pointing towards motor. Test it on a buddys boat if necessary. Make sure it will get hard.

Clear as much as you can out of the way. Air silencer, miscellaneous things. Get a good view of the front and underside of carb assemblies etc. Some models the lower cowl can come off easily.

Tilt motor about 20 degrees. Pump bulb til firm. Keep pumping gently. Find the leak. You may need to clean everything 1st.

Common leaks that I see often:

1. Carb bowls.
2. Throttle butterfly shafts.
3. Bad seats/needles. Fuel will run out carb throat.
4. VST lid/gasket if applicable.
5. Fuel fittings. Follow fuel line from cowl to pump. Pump to primer.
6. Bad valve in primer is possible I suppose.
7. Bad pump is possible but I would expect worse running conditions if it ran at all.

If you have had the carbs/throttle bodies off check carefully the shaft that controls the butterflies. Some folks tighten the throttle bodies incorrectly making those shafts leak. If left that way they can wear and cause a permanent leak.
