I purchased an 84 merc 50 the steering was stuck so I removed the cable. I was able to back off the cable and it is seized but Cant remove it from the tilt tube due to it hitting the transom.

Ive done a few searches on the topic and it has been helpful but I have a few more questions.

do I have to pull the motor off the boat to get the steering cable out?

when I disconnect the linkage arm the motor swivels freely so that is not a problem but the steel shaft on the port side of the motor also seem to be seized as well.

how does the cable engage the steering anyway ?

Need to order some manuals and all I can find is the seyloc ones any place to get the merc manuals?

Re: Stuck Steering on 84 50hp

My solution to the same problem: Place bolt in the hole in the end of the steering shaft, it should be the proper diameter. Remove the Nut on the starboard side of tilt tube, have a helper pull on the cable housing, you place a piece of spruce 2x4 against the end of the cable where you place the bolt, tap firmly with hammer on 2x4 toward starboard side while helper is pulling. Before starting this spray PB Blaster or equivalent, on the shaft. Rod should move toward starboard. Remove bolt from end of rod. When removed, cleanup the inside of the tilt tube with emory cloth rapped around a 7/16 inch wood rod slotted to accept the emory cloth. Use electric drill to spin the wood rod and emory cloth. It will take you a while to clean this 4 year mess out. Grease inside of tilt tube and shaft. 2nd Option: Buy new tilt tube. Good Luck
