Re: stuck receiver....

In Pa there is a chance getting a ticket if left in the hitch. They passed a law about two years ago

ND was close also to passing one, probably coming up again next session so i heard... Personally, if I'm not towing, the hitch is not attached... Have yet to have a problem with it rusting in!

Around here, if you don't remove it, someone else will. Guess they figure it's not wanted.

Re: stuck receiver....

I leave mine in as a reminders for the idiots not to tailgate.

.

Different stuff, BUT a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone actually works better than KROIL but doesn't stay mixed. ( plus is more flammable)

If they are that close, it isn't going to be an issue. The tailgate and bumper will be.

i heard a long time ago in Virginia you can't leave the ball on; supposedly it blocks the view of the license plate. Can't remember if it was a traffic law or inspection thing. Anyway, that may apply to a bumper hitch but not many under-bumper recievers. And I've been pulled over enough times, and eyeballed even more, that if it were a problem I'd hear about it.

What's the reason for the states that now have the law?

Not there. A previous thread suggested the combination as a penetrating fluid.

OK...that combo is definitely not used in Kroil.

I have used both Kroil and PB Blaster. Kroil is now my favorite.

Re: stuck receiver....

I always take the drawbar out after towing, one to prevent it rusting in place (but a good coating of grease would do that) more importantly if you get rear ended hard enough, the drawbar transfers collision forces directly to the frame of the vehicle, which I feel can increase damage. I think trailer hitches in general need to be built differently, in that they do not absorb any energy at all as bumpers are designed to do. Even a layer of energy absorbing material across the rear of the receiver itself such as used inside modern bumpers would help.

Air hammer if you can get to the back of the receiver or use it against the ball/nut.

Re: stuck receiver....

I'm wondering why there would possibly be a law dealing with keeping the bar in the receiver as well. It's not like the old days of bumper hitches where the ball can block the license. We keep the hitch on the main tow vehicle and the paint on the trailing edge of it is evidence of people pulling up too far parrallel parking and to me saving my bumper from being hit. I keep the hitch on specifically to protect the bumper from getting well bumped.

My theory: It increases the damage to the vehicle hitting it in addition to making such a bump more likely since the ball platform and ball are harder to see than the bumper.

Then there is the matter of hitting your chins...
