Re: Stuck Power Head Merc V-150

Outrage
Now I can see where your problem is. If you hadn't bought the parts first, the powerhead would have come off easy. This is the First Law of Anticipatory Frustration: If you buy a part or a tool, especially an expensive one that cannot possibly be used for anything else and is only required for one special job and that cannot be returned for a refund, in anticipation that you will actually be able to fit it before you have actually established that you can fit it, then you probably won't be able to fit it. I have a collection of useless bits and pieces to prove this law is correct. Anybody need a set of pre-reamed (that's a joke) king pin bushes for a 1963 EJ Holden, because I've still got them somewhere from not being able to fit them around 1970?

Re: Stuck Power Head Merc V-150

Tinkerer you nailed it, but you know sometimes it pays off. I carried a 1970 11hp Briggs & Stratton engine around for 10 years, thru 5 moves. Wouldn’t you know last year the 1969 10 hp riding mower I now use blew up and that old 11 horse fit perfect so hang on to those king pin bushings. They may come in handy, in the next 20 years.

Rednekn. Thanks for the offer that may save me from cutting the studs. One of the earlier posts suggested drilling holes thru the center section along the stud shafts so penetrating oil can be applied at the hart of the problem. I didn’t want to do that because of the damage to the center section. I’m not sure if your center section will work, but I am willing to pay shipping. Does anyone know if a 1982 center section will fit on a 1987 motor?

Hopefully the guy with the torch will be available this weekend and we’ll get this thing rolling.

Outrage,

Thanks for your kind words on my post.

I feel for you dilema, with the six threaded studs and what has to be some nasty corrsion. I was only hung up on broken .bolt

One thing in my favor, or maybe not we did strip the bolt out of the block, was the boat weight. I was hoisitng against a 27' Chaparral, which didn't lift at all (but our hyraulic tilt did start to come up). Is there any way to get more weight in your boat while heating, beating, etc?

I know you will also be succesful with continued effort. Hang in there (heavy, so to speak!!!!!!!!)

Re: Stuck Power Head Merc V-150

IT'S OFF, after much cursing, heating, oiling, beating, and prying it’s off. There was so much corrosion on the long studs I couldn’t even tell that there was an inch and a half of thread inside the housing until I put them on a wire wheel. Prays to the power of heat, the guy with the oxy / acetylene torch was unavailable Saturday so I went to Wal-Mart and bought a MAPP torch. I heated the studs until they were cherry red and kept them that way for 45 seconds to a minute. Then I took an old flat head screwdriver and drove it in at the base of the power head right next to the stud. I got movement, only 1/8 inch but enough to take a putty knife and dig the gasket out from around the stud. Then I shot Kroil into the gap and heated the stud again until I saw the Kroil bubbling. I repeated the process several times for each bolt and after several hours (all day), an entire can of Kroil, and a 16 oz bottle of MAPP gas, it came free.

Thanks to everyone especially Tinkerer, Jimd, and AndyL, if any of you guys ever find your way to Southern Maryland you’ve got a place to stay and a boat to use. Redneckn, I appreciate the offer but I won’t be needing that center section. RKwood sorry I didn’t reply to your support post but I only visit this site while I’m at work and some days I just get too busy.

Question for any one if I need help with the rebuild should I start a new thread or continue with this one?

Thanks again everyone this is a great forum.

Congratulations and well done. I was told only heat would do it but would have preferred less aggressive means. Will look forward to your next progress report on the rebuild. Good luck.

Andy

Re: Stuck Power Head Merc V-150

Well done and congratulations.

Then again, it's a bit disappointing that we're still stuck with the same time-wasting grunt and bash system.

I was looking at MAPP torches a week ago and wondering if they're hotter than propane, but couldn't make sense of the limited temperature info on the cylinder and needless to say nobody in the store, which prides itself on all shop staff being tradespeople, had a clue. I think there were two types of MAPP cylinder there. What sort did you use, and how long did it take to get the stud cherry red?

Just on the reverse of heating, I had to make a mild steel bracket a couple of weeks back. No oxy so thought I'd try age old method. Fired up the BBQ with heat beads and jarrah (dense wood with high heat) and stuck 1/4 inch thick steel bar in. Works a treat. Way easier than cold bending

Re: Stuck Power Head Merc V-150

Tinkerer once again I have to agree with you. I left some pretty nasty marks on the bottom of the power head and the top of the exhaust housing. I think they will seal up once the gasket is in place, if not I’ll have to use a double gasket or Permatex.

I got the Burnz-O-Matic TS4000T with a 16 oz cylinder of MAPP gas. The kit was only $37.00 at Wal-Mart. I wish I had gone to Burnzomatic.com before buying they have an Oxy / MAPP setup that I would have rather had because I need to cut out and patch some rust on my trailer.

I it took 30 to 45 sec. to turn the end of the stud red. I didn’t have room to effectively use any kind of heat shield but it only slightly pitted it the housing. I guess it must have been the perfect temperature, hot enough to get the other end of the stud hot but not hot enough to melt the aluminum housing.

On a side note it seems all of the Burnz-O-Matic MAPP torches will also use Propane if you need a cooler flame. And even the Oxy / MAPP set could be used as Oxy / Propane.
