I have a 1988 Johnson 14hp with some stuck or sticky piston rings...what is a good way to free them...I was told of some sort of a intake carb spray...kinda like fogging the cylinders....any input would be great,

Re: stuck piston rings

OMC engine tuner or similar product will help to dissolve and free up carbon deposits that may be built up in the piston grooves. What leads you to believe the rings are stuck?Did a compression test reveal some low numbers?

I had the engine worked on by a repairshop that is a Johnson shop......he did a compression test...each cylinder showed 85 #'s I believe...he said a good sign is when you have an idle speed and when you put the engine in gear...if the rpm drops quite low...you have stuck rings...is this somewhat true?

10-4 on the decarb and might do it several times. Then keep Sea Foam in your fuel tank and the problem shouldn't return..........based upon your "driving" habits.

Re: stuck piston rings

there is a thread on here about it and someone will point it out. But basically you run it while spraying seafoam or other type cleaner in the carb. The concentrated cleaner will disolve the carbon build up out of the engine resulting in added power and compression.

Re: stuck piston rings

I think that s the procedure that talks about on the OMC engine tuner spray....run the engine...give a 2 second shot of this spray in the carb...and then let it run for a second or two and then load the carb up again until the engine stalls....let it soak for 3 to 16 hours and start the engine up and run until cleared out...does this sound like something I should be doing?

heh, man...thanks for the info.

Yep - - give it a good run when you are done and might want to put in new plugs. There is a FAQ on this.

Site is full of info. Go to Search and plug in decarb or Sea Foam. Numerous ways to do it.
