Dang, just finally got the boat dug out from the heavy load of snow that collapsed my boat shelter back in January, and it is not a pretty picture, there is two split area in the front part of the hull, due to weight bearing down on it, and now I find out, that the hull split close to the marriage line from the cap from the control area to about 2/3rds down the hull, I am not talking cracks, I am talking complete separation, so I figure I am going have to take the cap off, and completely rebuild that split. and then put the cap back on. What type of cloth and resin materials would be recommended to put something of this nature back together?

I should be able to get a few pictures in the AM..but it is not pretty, I am thinking I might just try and find another hull and transfer everything over to the new hull...

Thanks.

Once we see a picture we can tell you more, but it's very possible that the fasteners just popped loose from the wieght (that hold the cap and hull together) and you need only to reseal it and fasten it back together.

agree with the above.

i really doubt that you need to scrap her......fiberglass is as strong as steel, and can withstand a winter snofall plus a shed.
i have done many a repair when the boat has been caught 'tween a rock and a dock during a storm.
uasually a pretty easy fix.

just post pics.

the repair materials are 1.5 oz csm and 1708. with poly.

i would not worry about epoxy.....LOL....i am sitting in front of a coustomers boat that he just built...an 81 bayliner.....looks like he did a deck, transom and stringers all with epoxy.....he has $2000 in materials in a $1000 dollar boat.

Nope guys, this did not pop the cap, it actually fractured and tore the hull about 4 inches down from the cap marriage line, the hull is torn completely through..it completely collapsed the cap and pushed the hull out and then tore it open, I would have to butt joint and cover both the inside and outside to put this back together...!

YUCK!!! Yep you got some major damage there....I always try and hope for the best, but not the case here. Don't know if she's worth repairs or not....you'll have to do some carefull assesments there MT.

It can be repaired for sure....most anything can, the question is.....is it worth it or do I find another hull somewhere.

OOOOUUUUCCCCCCHHHHHH!!!! That realy SUCKS!!!! We had a LOT of that type damage here in Oklahoma at the marinas with our 30" snowfall. What kind of boat was she? Looks like a vintage 60's Rude' hanging off the back. Was she recently restored? Man, that is SAD!!!! If you are Attached to her then I guess you will have to attempt the repair, if not, then I'd be looking for another hull like CW suggested. Good Luck man, I feel for ya!!!

Thanks guys, I was kinda figuring it is time for a new hull, she is a 1960 seaking with a 1962 big twin 40 on it, I had just bought a new rack and pinion steering system for this hull, so the one I find will have to be just about the same size!. It looks like fishing this memorial day will be from the bank, unless I find something this week!

I LOVE those old 60's runabouts. That is a crying shame. Sorry for your loss.

R.I.P... That's huge :( I think I would have to say that unless there is some sentimental value there, might be time to start looking for a new girl....

I'd be looking for an aluminum Starcraft runabout to bolt that sweet 'Rude on.

Looks like it's time to put that homeowner's insurance to work! Ouch, and they say snow is soft. Now I remember why I moved south.

Don't mean to resurrect and old thread, but beings I started it...

I figured, I would let those who commented know, I had some spare time on my hands and have actually resurrected this boat, I will takes some pictures later this afternoon and post, it ended up, not being quite as hard as I thought, took about $100 worth of materials and I will have it back out on the lake this weekend, not pretty, but functional! To be pretty, would require a whole new paint job!

This time when she hits the water, she will have a newer electric start big twin 40 as well as new seats and a complete new modern steering system..paint will probably be done next spring.

:D
