It goes to the linkage on the lower unit.I would not mess with it or take it out.It took a act of congress to get mine back in,but mine was not stripped.

mine will go right in then just spin I don't think the screw is stripped it either the casing or whatever it screws into there were a couple shavings on it when I pulled it out

take it back to the shop. the lower unit will need to be taken apart and retapped or replaced. the metal is really thin so im not really sure if it can be repaired. good luck

Re: stripped srew lower unit

The guy probably will deny any responsibility because there was no reason to remove that screw unless he had to take the gearcase apart. HOWEVER, too many people, not knowing any better, remove it thinking it is the oil drain screw (it isn't). That may be what happened here. I guess we are seeing a test of character here. He may deny touching it and claim that you stripped it when attempting to stop the leak. Which might be a valid arguement. Would be interesting to see what the jury says.

Well, whatever, the cure now that it is stripped is to install a Heli-coil in the stripped hole. It is a 1/4-28 thread. They do make that size Heli-coils, but not too common. The installation kits aren't cheap.

I looked up your gear case and realize there is one more thing I know nothing about. I was looking for a shift fork but didn't see one. I'm thinking out loud hear but wondering if the part the screw turns into is out of alignment and nothing is stripped? You can play around with it and a helper, shifting in and out of gear with a scribe and a good light to see if in fact your lined up with the receiving thread. You've nothing to loose IMO as you're on your way toward pulling the gear case apart anyway. Maybe someone with knowledge of your gear case will tell us my idea won't work. Wait and see. Best of luck. Rick.

yes that will work.I pulled mine out on day and i had to play with the shiftier to get it to go back in.If it came out it will act like its stripped. It is hard to strip that pin in sometimes.

I'd take it back to the shop and see what they have to say.

Re: stripped srew lower unit

today a friend told me if the screw was not in the right spot I would b able to spin the prop while it was in gear. so I put in gear and the prop locked up when I did try to spin it. so I think we are on the right path but when I pulled the screw out myself I did see shavings around it whether or not it is the casing or what It connects to inside the unit is stripped

Sorry to say, but it sounds like machine shop or helicoil time. Did you ever take it back to the shop that changed your l/u oil ??

Re: stripped srew lower unit

Heli-Coils do work great but you will have to have the needed size drill and tap for that size Heli-Coil. So you will basically have to disassemble the unit to drill, tap and install the Heli-Coil and then clean the metal chips/particles out and reassemble to install the screw again. Not a hard job but time consuming and certain tools are needed. But it does fix this problem for good also... This IS exactly why I like doing everything myself. At least then I know what is done and why.

I've used heli-coils and it is still the best way to go. Actually after the heli-coil is installed, the thread is stronger than the orginial.

Re: stripped srew lower unit

if I took it to a shop to get done would anyone have a guesstimate as to what it would cost I do not think I have the proper experience to be tearing it apart I take that back I could tear apart but probably never be able to get it back together unless there is some very readable instructions out there I have to assume its not the casing itself because the screw would probably try to grab I think the screw tightens to something inside I am loosing sleep over this on a normal year I would be on the water already but the weather has been extra crappy gotta foot of snow last night suppose to get another foot tonight so I still got some time to be ready by the way I appreciate all the help from everybody

You may want to take it to a Good shop and get an estiminate on it. That way you'll have another opinion.
