Stranded by 40 hp Force

My motor is a 1996 40 hp Force. The problem is intermittant starts. Last Sunday it had trouble starting. Fooled around with it a little and it ran. Last Monday checked the fuel filter and put gas treatment in the tank and motor cranked and ran.<br />Went fishing last Thursday, motor gave no problem. Went fishing Saturday morning, motor gave no problem. Went fishing Saturday evening, motor worked fine until ready to go home. Motor would not crank.<br />The motor is turning, but not cranking. There is gas in the carburator. Had to get towed back to the launch. Put the boat on the trailer. Turned the key and it cranked. <br />Has anyone had a similar problem or any solutions?

So problem is only with starting?<br />Runs fine after it is started?<br /><br />Are you using the choke?<br />Is the choke operating properly?<br /><br />Can you list your starting procedure please?

I tried it with the choke and without the choke.<br />This happened Saturday after it had been cranked and ran several times.<br />As for starting procedure with a warm engine all you have to do is turn the key and it cranks.<br />Also, the kill switch was checked and operated several times, so the kill switch was in the run position.

Next time it does this, pull the spark plugs and check for spark. It could be an intermittant electrical problem instead of a fuel problem.

Does it ever happen on a cold motor?

It has happened both ways - with a cold motor and a warm motor.

Carry a jumper wire with you next time and place it between the leads on the neutral start interlock switch. If that fixes it, then the switch is the culprit.
