I was just kidding about the Bayliner. I have a junky ol Bass boat from the 70's so I wouldn't have anything against a Bayliner.

You did your best. They either had a plan or were stupid. You are a good person for even caring.

Yup, I have a Bayliner. No offense taken. I'm used too to it. It's paid for and it runs. :D

Could have been criminal activity, maybe a drug deal or exchange of some sort. Criminals are not known for being mental giants, who knows what sort of weird junk was going on. That is about the only reason I could think of for them to turn down a perfectly good tow.

Maybe they are trying to save on gas (padelling...gas price is high?) and use manual labor instead. Some exercise do kill noone. Instead would probably give them some muscle.

Being a native New Yorker, I suspect the boat may have belonged to someone else who had yet to discover its disappearance, or the owner was on board being prepared to abandon against his will.
I saw a 74' Carver once that was almost worth it.

wajajaja,

From the south, you can safely go up to Trenton, NJ. I have gone a little past the last navigation buoy. Jet boats and small tinny's can go further.

There are Marina's in the Trenton area but I don't know if they have public access. I heard there is a public ramp in Trenton located on Lamberton Street south of Lalor St. Also, There is a municipal ramp in Bordentown, NJ (Just south of Trenton). Never used either though. Call around before you head out. This document from the NJ DEP lists boat access sites on the Delaware River.

Yup, was out last weekend... White-knuckle ride to say the least! Just got another 4" to 8" of rain yesterday. The river is just loaded with debris. I'd give it a week or so until the water level drops and some of the crap clears out. Be careful.

I'm glad to know you stopped and offered some help Ratfish. Maybe two years ago had a fuel pump go bad 10 miles from the nearest boat launch on the illinois river. Only one that stop was a older man in a small john boat. took him about 2 hours at full throttle to pull us back. Its nice to see people still willing to lend a hand.

They wanted to get to deeper water so the could scuttle the boat, they just needed to wait until nobody was around to see'em do it.

qaztwo,

Many years ago, my brother and I came across a guy in an 18' Wellcraft with a busted 115HP Yamaha. I was in my 12' tinny with a 9.9HP Evinrude. I didn't think it would be a good idea to tow him with my boat, so I put my 9.9 on his transom, my bro and I hopped in his boat and away we went. It took about an hour or so to get him back to the dock. He was most appreciative.

Northern Eclipse,

Never thought of that one. I guess anything is possible. You just never know...

The reason why I came up with it was many years ago I knew this Idiot that blew the motor on his boat, the next morning it was found burnt to a crisp, about a year after Idiot was arrested and convicted of arson and Insurance fraud.

Re: Stranded Boater ???

Reminds me of a trip some years back - was heading for the ramp about 1/4 mile away when I saw an inflatible with an older guy and a "babe" aboard dead in the water. The engine cover was off and they were waving to me. I pulled up alongside to see if I could help. Seems they had run out of gas and wanted a tow. "No problem." says I.

Well - - - not really - - - they wanted a tow 6 miles accross Biscayne Bay to where their yacht was anchored (they were in the tender). They had run out of booze which was more important to them than a tow to the marina. I left them and advise the dockmaster of their plight when I got in. I have often wondered what "the rest of the story" was for them.
