Get or build a saw horse tupe structure with a 2x10-12 and mount the outboard as you would on the transom in a vertical level position.
Make sure you get ALL gas out of carbs or u will pay later lol. Good luck

the worst way is laying down with the spark plugs down. A motor can seize up and be worthless that way. All the cooked oil/gas residue trickles down and seals it up.
On either side might damage the fittings on the down side. Front won't work.
Stand it up, even if propped up in a corner. Plus it takes up less room.

up and down. If on the boat then reomve the transom saver and lower the motor all the way down. It will keep everything as it should be and allow any water to drain out. Dont wrap it in plastic will just trap water moisture. I alway sparay the whoe engine with wd40 to repel moisture. Also add oil to cylinders

great to see a reply from across the pond! ok, next question, how important is it to add fuel stabilizer (seafoam etc) to your last tank of the season, and is fogging the motor down really worth it if it only gets stored for the winter (winter is long here! we only have two seasons.....winter and august. lol )

I know I'll get chastised but I don't add anything or do anything special for winterizing.
Chainsaws, lawnmowers, whippersnipers, etc all get the same treatment.
I still have the same Stihl 039,that I bought about 20 years ago...only really gets used to block 5-6 cord of wood a year, then back downstairs.
I do store it my outboard, upright on a homemade stand,in a semi heated basement.
I do run seafoam in the odd tank thoughout the season.
I'm in the same province you are, normally start boating in Apr.,though Dec.
Probably just lucky.

Re: storing a small outboard.....best position?

i have never added any thing to my fuel before, but saw some great results with seafoam cleaning out my 1957 5.5 outboard, gunna add some to the lawnmower this year to see how it goes.
i used to go boating as soon as the ice went, and boated till it came back, but now i only do a bit of mackerel and cod fishing along the shores of st.margarets bay, in a 12ft, sometimes 10ft boat, so i have to pick and choose what days are fit to go.
