Stolen Batteries

This lovely labor day weekend I met up with some friends, put the boat in the water, go to turn it on and...... nothing. hmm, switches are all off? what the hell? why is my battery cover on the floor?

Yea that's when I noticed that some ******* stole my batteries. Nothing else was missing, everything was put back nicely (minus the battery case cap) and yea both of my brand new batteries were gone.

I have two questions... Has anyone made some sort of a lock for their batteries? also, do I have to put two back in there or would one work fine?

Thanks

Re: Stolen Batteries

So, where was your boat kept?

(1) usually the batteries are accessed via the engine hatch (but not always) . . . so, if you can lock the engine hatch . . . padlock maybe :noidea:

(2) if you have a battery selector switch that has the "1", "Both" "2" positions . . .(like a Perko switch), then you can just run on 1 battery.

Keep in mind that the thieves now know where two brand spanking new batteries are soon to be located. I would plan accordingly.

That sucks. At least here, 'good' marine starting batteries are surprisingly difficult to locate. Trying to find an equivalent replacement on the quick for my Northern brand battery proved not possible as I didn't have time to special order.

Re: Stolen Batteries

If you rigged it just right, you could set up a "burglar alarm" with just enough C-4 to discourage the thief without damaging your boat to severely.

Yea I know. I was thinking razor blades on the underside of the seat and along the lid of the battery cover/case thing. :D

I need to also build a lock box type thing that would keep them a little safer than just lifting up a seat.

I keep my boat at a uhaul. It's kind of my only option at the moment. I need access to their security tapes but the owner is being a douche, so now I have to go through the police. Sucks

Maybe the owner is giving you a hard time because he could be in on it, AND he now has a heads up to erase the tapes before you get the necessary paperwork...just a thought! Anyway there are so many ways to secure most anything with alarms and/or video surveillance cameras. However, anything easy to take will always be the items thugs want... Anything not positively secured will be fair game these days... Install a lock on any compartment and install an alarm system as well if someone tries to fat finger your equipment.

Someone's been watching too much Burn Notice.
