Re: still use live bait?

I like to throw artificials but there are days when nothing beats a shiner on a bobber and sittin' back with your coffee or a beer and a sandwich and watchin' the little bugger swim. I love it when a lazy shiner all of a sudden gets nervous and starts tugging that float ALL over and then PLOOP! down it goes. When I just want to relax that's the way I fish.

I use live/dead bait most of the time. Right now i'm using wax worms on a jig and spawn for steelhead. Will use crawlers, minnows, wigglers, and the best bait of all (imo.) soft shell crabs.

after seeing musky's giant snake lure, I was
wondering how a garter snake might work? LOL
we can use 2 poles here, so usually one live,
the other is casting something. and when I want
to take a break from casting, I still got a line
in the water.

Hello,M.Y.
Been there done that.
It causes 2 problems.
1:The damn things wrap themselves around your line much worse than an eel.(they perceive pain much different than fish).
2:They need to breath a lot more than you might expect. And they die fast.

M.Y.
Before too long we will have a whole brand new ferry laying useless in the Gennesee river mouth. That should give us some great wreck fishing.

Re: still use live bait?

MellowYellow...Most lures I have been buying are either for trolling or casting as with that 16" witch you saw.. Heave it out and make a slow twitching retrieve. I'm afraid my casting for hours on end with this heavy stuff is to much for this ole arm.

When it comes to picking size of lure is whether you are lookn for that 45lb class (50") or smaller. If these gators can hunker down on 12" plus walleyes they want a meal not an appetizer.

Never have fished for the gator in river streams but next month I am going to see if what Bubba says is true on stream muskys in Tenn...Although where he comes from musky are thrown on the banks and left to die...What a shame for such a magnificent warrior, who will put the strongest arm to test be destroyed in this manner..

Re: still use live bait?

Live bait??? Only use it if I actually want to catch something!

Prefer artificial - more of a challenge and not as messy! However, if I am taking someone that only wants to catch fish, and not "fish", then we break out the live bait.

JB - toes can be considered live bait, and you may need a special license for chumming - all depends on the amount of toe jam they are holding

Don't tell my bass-fishing buddies, but I still get a kick out of catching bluegill on crickets under porcupine quills. No, I mean, watching the kids catch bluegill on crickets under porcupine quills. yeah, that's it.

Can't use it here in the PacNW...it's banned primarily because they don't want to introduce "alien species," i.e., critters from, say, Texas, to our waters. ;) The lovely bait tank in my boat makes a nice fender holder.

So how do I add all those extra graemlins to my replies?

Re: still use live bait?

Most of my fishing is fresh water due to where I live. I use both. For catfish, I use live bait or cut bait. I normally throw an artificial or fly for bass, crappie, and bream.

Has anyone ever used a Black Salty. They are raised in fresh water but do survive in sea water. They are produced by my farm. www.blacksalty.com If they are not available locally, they can be sent to you via FedEx.

Now that is just plain wrecklesness to use those non-native species fish as bait fish for freshwater. I do believe those would be illegal in my neck of the woods too.

We have many lakes here no minnows of any kind allowed.
