IMO, start with a trolling motor.
Trolling motors can side mount so that top of motor becomes an arm rest.
Trolling motor batteries can go up front so that canoe doesn't get blown around with every little breeze of wind. Guy at bass pro said 60Lbs thrust = 1HP

I bought a small outboard for my squareback and it was too much. Then I bought a trolling motor and it was just right. A gheenoe stays wide all the way back to the transom and can handle more power before the boat becomes unsafe. My canoe tapered back down like a cigar. It was rated 3-4HP but as the guy at bass pro explained ... " that is how much the transom can take before breaking. The Canoe becomes unsafe long before then."
So I'd say try a trolling motor. If it is too small then sell it or use it on another boat. Bass pro has new trolling motors for $100-$120 and you can sell it on ebay for very nearly same amount. (for some reason used trolling motors are a hot item).

Bass pro had a 30Lb minn kota for $100 and it does a great job of pushing the canoe around with a $40 wall mart deep cycle battery. They tried to confuse me with numbers at bass pro and sell me into a a $200 super duper battery. The wal mart lasts all day for me.

Already have one, but like every other redblooded American male I'm not satisfied! Truth is, my BIL and I were supposed to split the cost of the canoe, but he won't accept my half of the money, so I'm gonna get a little power plant for it instead. I'll be able to use it on my raft too.

i'd take a careful look at the shape of canoe. if it doesn't stay wide at the back then it can get unsafe in a hurry.

It's a 17' square stern aluminum canoe rated up to 4 horseys. Should be fine.

The power is OK, but I don't like that OB... It's from San Diego and looks to have what appears to be a zinc anode bolted to the AV plate. IE: salt water use, could have a lot of corrosion, especially in that old of an OB.

I'm betting Columbus used that thing as a kicker on the Santa Maria

That Suzi would probably do the job, incoop, but for your square stern I think a JohnnyRude 3-4.5 twin would be smoother and weigh only a few ounces more.

My beloved and sorely missed Johnny JW-13 3HP only weighed 29lb, had a built in tank and would troll at idle all day on less than a quart of fuel. Deluxe versions of the same engine weigh a bit more, have a bit more power and have FNR. I would still go for the 3HP.

I've owned a couple of those over the years and their good motors. I never checked but they seem identical to a Nissan/Tohatsu of the same size.
That motor has definitely been used in salt water and has not been washed down properly. Shipping is way to high for that motor. The current price with shipping is already too much for that motor.

This one looks promising. Only thing that concerns me is it's a long shaft, but I don't know what that means within the context of these small outboards. Doesn't really look that long to me. I've asked him for the actual length. Would the shaft length be an issue (keep the junior high jokes to yourselves please) you think?

Bad news, incoop.

Sailboat means a 25", extra long shaft. You need a short, 15" shaft. Engine doesn't look convertible.

Also, that engine doesn't look right to be descended from the JW family. It may be an outsourced single cylinder. I don't know much about JohnnyRudes newer than about 1990.
