ok guys,

remember me, the one with the popping from #7 cylinder in my 1986 Volvo Penta Aq225e v8 305 5.0.

The mechanic called and said, he declared that the cylinder has compression, and the valve is either "burnt or sticky" on number 7.. He only charged me $40.00 for determing this, and he said he wouldnt want to work on it. because the Block, i think, (piece just below the spark plug) had epoxy or jb weld on the side covering a crack. A crack possibly caused from being frozen, not winterized properly I imagine. He suggested new engine.. HAHALOL, yeah right.

I asked if he thought, i could still fix the valve and get some more play out of the engine , or lube it up or something, have the heads machined, put it back together and just enjoy the best of what time may be left on it. Or run the darn thing on 7 cylinders, Jeeeez , I just want to cruise and hit some waves. Any thought's? :(
should i get a second opinion ,,,...
----------------------------
86bayliner
Norcross, GA

get a second opinion. I ran my welded block for more than 10 years after the freeze with no problems. Seems like something can be done at the head level, just need to know what the problem is.

I can understand him not wanting to work on it. Just in case stuff starts going to hell he might feel responsible in some way.

Having said that, if his analysis is correct you could take the head to a machine shop and have it rebuilt

Pull the rocker cover and check the valve spring, rocker and such. Ya might get lucky. Is the rest of the engine ok? It may be worth changing the head and hitting a lot more waves.

I'd look for a new (used) head. You could kill two birds with one stone, new used head wouldn't be cracked, and it wouldn't have the valve problem. Which bank do you need? I have an extra starbord head from a 350.

If the cylinder HAS compression (how much?) How does the mechanic figure bad valve....."burnt or sticky" valve= loss of compression. Did he tell you the comp. readings?

No he did not, all he said was the cylinder had compression. he did think maybe the valve could be fixed or machined, i'd just have to find somebody else to do it or help me.

thanks for the input

86bayliner

Just tell him you're confused about the cylinder with the bad valve still having compression and ask him to explain a little more about how he came up with his diagnosis. You may have misunderstood him somewhere because it doesn't sound like he's tryin to get to you or he wouldn't have declined to work on it further.

maybe he did a leak down test after the compression was low ;)

tommays

i did give him a hint, i told him when i go there, it was #7 cylinder , a compression test needs to be done, i think it has a burnt or sticky valve. was giving him a hint a bad thing. He said the distributor has to be pulled out, IS that a PITA, to pull a distributor out and put it back in.

its all easy. but it seems its getting the shot in the dark approach. do a leakdown on #7, then use a vacum gauge hunt for any broken valves, springs or valve problems. be aware that a leaking riser will cause the same symptoms. as will a worn lobe on the cam.the distributer is the easiest part of the job.

Rodbolt...being I'm still kinda new at this boat game... I'd like to know what you're talking about too... How do you check for a leaking riser?????
I've got two boats with cracked manifolds and possibly leaking risers.

no good test. the manifold can be tested. if I suspect a riser or if its used in saltwater and over 3 years old it gets tossed. carefully look at the plug electrodes with a good light. look for any signs of green spots or slight rust.

Sometimes a "sticky" valve can be caused by carbon deposits on the valve stem. Try a spray type decarbon treatment. May or may not help, but couldn't hurt.

Dave
