Re: Stern drive has a grinding or whirring noise

The upper unit was completely vod of oil so i very much doubt that there was any contamination, however they are going to check the lower gears. This was not mer'c fault but my own, that unit had never been serviced in 13 years aside from oil, the knuckle's were in great shape no slop or roughness, the water pump impeller was intact and the rubber was smooth and plialbe, All in all id say it;s a great system.................just a operator error and a really bad one. In the mean time i stumbled accross a 2001 wellcraft 18.6 w/4.3 Efi Vovlo sx outdrive.
The boat was new, they had lost it in inventory during a mangement transition and it sat in a warehouse for 3 years. It had on 5 hours on the boat and i was able to purchase a volvo esp for a additional 4 years for a total of 6 years.

All told i got out the door for 13,300, i have a boat to enjoy for the summer, i can now spend some quality time with the Starcraft restoration bringing up to its true potential sell the boat :)'() with a good peace of mind , and apply a quote that i will not ever forget

Don S: Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time,
But always enough time to do it again?

TailGunner, I adopted a new policy at the shop after reading your post. On my pressurized drive oil system, I have a roll of caution tape and when I drain the drive, I put the tape on the drive, alerting everyone, when oil has been put in drive, caution tape comes off. Trying to learn by others mistakes. Sorry it happened.

Lost the boat in transition...Wasn't that a movie? How in the heck do you loose a boat? Well at least you found it. I can only hope the the boat was properly decommisioned before being...lost? At any rate, glad you are back on the water and I'm sorry about the misfortune on the old boat. You are one to do it right the first time and I respect that. Too bad the outdrive fluid check lesson came the hard way. How about some pics of the new find? By the way, just came up with a name for her..."Lost in Transition". Great story behind this one too!

Have you checked EBay for an upper housing? I've never scanned it for Alpha stuff, but did notice a couple of Cobra upper housings while scanning cobra parts. Very reasonable cost. Maybe you'll get lucky and can cut several hundred off of your repair....
