Took the boat out for a quick run, ran about 1-2 miles when the stern drive developed a high pitched wine or ginding (Like a belt grind on a car).

Immeditaley killed the motor and went into shore. Loaded up took it home put on the muffs's started the thing up slight grind still present. Notices no water comeing out of the pump (lower unit).

Replaced the water pump still no water coming and the grind is still present. Took off the upper unit and the diver line knuckles appear ok they rotate quite freely.

One thing i did notice the lower unit oil did have some shaving's

Could this be the gears? it sound;'s like that is where the grinding is coming from

Re: Stern drive has a finding noise

Very minute amount i should add the boat was running fine at planing speed, The grinding started when going to wot, after i reached it there was a whirring noise and a loss of speed. Needless to say i killed the motor and limped in about 40-50 yards. (Dind't hit anything whatever broke was due to accleration)

:'( Yes this is dissapointing to say the least.

IF it happened that quick, I would wounder if the drive had the proper amount of gear lube in it to start with. The upper gears and bearings may have been dry causing the noise. Since you shut it down quickly, the damage may not be noticable in the gear lube out the bottom. Might try pulling the top cover off the drive and having a look. Use a new oring to put it back if everything looks ok.
Another possibility is a bad gimbal bearing or ujoints.

Auugh...I hope it's a spun hub! Doesn't resolve shavings but it sounds possible. Loss of power has me, something is slipping I can't imagine it's gears.

Imagine the gears "melted down" from high heat and lack of oil.will post a pic tomorrow.

Gun,

I know you ran it for a bit and rechecked the lube level with the dipstick. Too many threads on this. Please say you did!

Took a closer look @ it this morning, the bottom gear scored the chamber quite badly. I'd guess it cut a 1/8 " groove which im sure makes this upper unit toast. Can anyone confirm this so i can get on to a new upper case?

If the ends of the teeth haven`t gone thru the case, it may be repairable

Damn Gun, if I had the parts I'd give em too you. Don't be too hard on yourself. You've been too commited to doing this right from the git go so look at it on the bright side. The drive will be like new and maybe, just maybe the gears were shot anyway. Hang in there and keep us posted. I'll add some links for places I've heard that might have the parts you need.

Re: Stern drive has a grinding or whirring noise

Results' of this simple over sight were as follow's, $260.00 for the gears, $400.00 for labor and $400.00 for a used upper case. Running the gears dry heated them up so hot they flattened and scored the chamber you see in the above pic. A $1000.00 dollar over sight yes, now if i can only get another 13 year's of trouble free operation.

I sure hope you had the lower dissassembled and inspected before you ever ran it with the new upper.
All it would take is a few pieces of metal in the lower from the previous upper to start the lower on it's way.
I have never seen one with the upper that bad that didn't have metal in the lower, bearings.
