Re: Stereo recommendation

Yup - the OEM versions tend to be "simple" but the aftermarket stuff is made complex for the enthusiast market. They want control over everything so the makers give it to them with all those buttons.

BTW, you may be able to pick up a remote control for it that has just the simple buttons. I went that route for mine and so I hardly use the controls on the faceplate.

Re: Stereo recommendation

I have to find the manual and see if a remote is available for it. That's a good idea as most of the remotes I've seen are nice and simple. But then we might have to play "find the remote". :)

I remember the Clarion units on SeaRay's had a "remote" that was wired. It was a 2 1/2 inch round unit like a gauge that could be mounted anywhere you could run the wire. Real simple controls.

I've seen those rnsi - nice thing is you don't need a line of sight view of the stereo to use them. You can mount it right at the helm which is nice.

My stereo is mounted in an enclosure in my cuddy and I have and IR remote. To solve the "find the remote" problem, I installed a BoatMate Communications Caddy ($8) right at the helm and put my cell phone and the remote in there and never let them wander :) Here is what it looks like:
http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=73201

Rather than use the included suction cups, I used the marine grade 3M mounting tape - the kind of stuff that they use to mount aftermarket bug guards and stuff on cars and trucks. Costs maybe $6 for a small roll at home depot or an autoparts store

That's one way, Ralph. Except on my boat, I can see the remote going overboard. I'm good for that. Is your remote waterproof or are you just careful? I try to keep all of my electronics (phone, pager, etc.) in ziplock bags. Had to wash out the phone one too many times!

Re: Stereo recommendation

I installed an Audiovox car unit in my dash (w/MP3), along with some marine speakers, all purchased from Buy.com. I would have just gone with car speakes, but these were only a few $ more, and the white grille matches my interior ;)
I've had it in all summer, and the only time I've really used it was while I was fishing, and listening to a ball game. While underway, I'd have to have it turned-up too loud just to hear it, so that's not for me.
If you're not looking for anything fancy, they have a marine AM/FM cassette unit with 2 speakers for $60.

I would suggest that unless you purchase a waterproof unit, get one of those inexpensive radio covers. At the very least you wouldn't have to worry about the occasional splash, ruining your investment.
