Hi all and good boating:

I bought a Centurion SV230 wake, sky boat with a tower. The stero system is good as long I do not turn the engine on. Once I turn the engine on there is vey high pitch buzzing sound from the speakers. A boat shops says it is normal, but I do not buy it. Any suggestions. Very much appreciated. Very frustrated boater.

Have you checked the ground on the unit. Sounds like to me it is not grounded good

I agree you should check the ground first.

Is the stereo a stock unit or something from pawn america?

This spring my stereo was giving me the same thing.
It stopped giving feedback when I removed the head unit and ran an Ipod headphone input directly to the amps. So in my case it was a problem with the head unit.

Go with bad grounding first. The next place is try shielding some of the interference from the motor. I've had bad plug wires do crazy things to sterio's in the past. Good luck!

Have the same problem, but only when the boat is on battery power. When connected to dock power, no buzzing so I figure it's a grounding issue. Mine is an after-market mid-grade Pioneer unit so it's not a 'pawn america' issue. One of these days it will annoy me enough to chase the wires....

As other's have said, grounding is the first place to look. You may want to ground the stero case as well. If you have an amp, check it too.

Does the sound change with the engine RPM? If it does, it is alternator noise.

Another thought is you can pick up the in-line noise filters from radio shack. They mount in line with the power to your radio / amp and will do a good job killing alternator noise.

Skip the Radio Shack route. Go to a real quality stereo shop, the higer end ones that have guys that install custom systems on boats and vehicles. They will know what you need. Those guys do it all day and dont mess with junk, they cant afford to do things twice... Not that you need to have them do any work, just give them the symptoms and take the time to get the model #s of the stereo and amp, and have the specs for the stereo and any amps or equalizers so they can tell you what you need. The more you have to give them , shows them you are serious and have your stuff together, You should go in person, I find that best, especially if you are nice. It shows them that you have a real need, and gives them a chance to sell you what you need. If the ground is shared with the engine, that will induce noise. You can move the ground wire around to also help "find" a quieter spot, as the stereo itself is usually not close to the alternator, but because the juice is coming from the battery and the battery is being charged by the alternator= noise. New engines have high voltage ignition systems, so = even more chance of noise. You can get "a" noise suppressor, but they make different sizes and quality matters ! You may need a supressor that attaches in-line with alternator to battery AND one that goes between the battery and the stereo AND one that goes between battery and amp. The more the quieter....
Good boating..
