steering tube nut universal????

I was putting a 83 75hp chrysler motor on my boat today and the steering cable nut doesn't appear to fit this motor(old one has some caked on yuck that I need to remove). Are these nuts universal?? the old motor was a 75 70hp evinrude. also along the same subject do they make any replacement nuts that are perhaps "C" shaped to slip over the cable and still tighten up to the motor??? thanks

No replacement nuts available to my knowledge.<br />Make sure the cable end is bottoming out and giving enough room to allow the nut to start.
