Steering system question

I have been looking at steering systems and have run into a question. In the catalogs I have looked at, the Teleflex Safe-T QC and "The Rack" are the same price. What are the differences between them, are there any issues with installing either of these systems in my boat(a 16 foot, center console, flatbottom, john boat, 65 horse Mercury)? Thanks.

Re: Steering system question

Either one will do the job just fine, so it all boils down to the amount of space you have inside the console to mount the systems helm...

The Safe-T QC helm is probably the more compact of the two and has a bit more flexability in the ways to mount the helm, so if your space in the console is limited, thats the one for you..

Big Green,

Basically, it ends up on being a matter of space (under the console) for different steering systems.

Both work equally well.

If you have an issue of engine torque (engine pulls wheel) then I would go with a rotary with the "no feedback feature" (NFB).

Otherwise, the choice is yours.

Re: Steering system question

The rack is exactly that.. is a rack and pinion steering system.. meaning that there is a big long flat section with the wheel shaft in the middle.. it can be hard to squeeze into tight dash setups..

The safeT (I just installed one of those myself.)
is a rotary steering system.. the end of the cable is threaded, and it meshes with a worm drive in the steering box..

Works well and the box is very small.

hope that helps..

regards

Franki

Thanks yall. That's pretty much what I was thinking, the Rack looked kind of long, I'm not sure it would fit inside the console. Thanks.

Agree with Djohns on "No Feedback" system. put one in my boat this past Spring and it is head and shoulders above old system. Easy to install and much easier at helm since there's no fighting the propellor torque. I thought the price was reasonable, too. Make sure cable length is right, as this can get difficult if it isn't.

Re: Steering system question

If you are trying to save money and dont need the NFB system, Teleflex has a rotary system not on your list. I dont have a part number handy, but I picked up one last week 113.00 10 ft cable complete kit. You can also try www.amarket.com for cable kit made by Uflex.

Hi also check out Ebay for new steering systems. they go from 92.00 to 113.00 plus 10.00 shipping most offer any lenght cable you need. This will beat a store by 30 or more bucks. If your in no great hurry I shop daily for projects that will be comming do for parts in the future. I buy the cable at one time then the helm and save evening bigger bucks. But the whole thing is always available any day on ebay.
steve
