I was T boned on the water. The impact broke my steering. I have a 1995 Lund with a 115 HP Johnson. Where can I find a parts break down sheet and instructions on repairing my problem? The motor turns free and the steering wheel is free. I turn the wheel and nothing happen, I move the motor by hand and nothing happens. I would appreciate and help.

Hi kemman - welcome to iboats.

There are only a handful of steering gear manufacturers out there and all the major boat builders usually just spec something, be it Teleflex or whatever off the shelf.

What might help is if you get your head under the console and look for a manufacturer's name on the steering gear. You might also discover right away what has happened. Obviously, if you can turn the wheel and turn the motor, but the two don't seem connected, something has snapped inbetween. Can you describe the accident in more detail? I assume you were hit on the side of the boat that the cable runs along? Did the boat lose all steering immediately or were you able to drive it home only to discover it broke later.

I guarantee you that Teleflex (www listed) is your friend and can solve your problem. Will not tell you what they did for me (a first time customer) as you might expect the same in return, but I am their customer for life.

Wow ... impact broke your steering. That had to beat the daylights out of your gunwale. Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the other guy has insurance and can get the repairs paid for?

Sounds like your cable broke. I agree with Texasmark ... find out what you need and get together with Teleflex.

I was traveling about 20 mph headed toward the boat ramp. The other boat was traveling much faster and hit my boat on the right rear corner. The impact dented the rear panel and spun me in circles. The steering was broken immediately. I had no control at that point. The other boat looked at their boat and took off at a high rate of speed. I was not thinking right at the time and I did not bet a boat number, type or description. They knew they we in the wrong and ran. If I would have had steering I would have chased them.

We had to start the trolling motor and continue to the boat ramp to load the boat. This happened on the last day of a 7 day trip on Lake Powell.

Replace the helm unit and the cable, don't take a chance that the cable could come loose again.

Cost about $150.
